There had been a few incidents of sand appearing in ways that were difficult to account for:  a thin layer on the prep table, the occasional grain reported in the gomasio.  Did it fall from the ceiling onto the table?  No other source seemed plausible.  Meanwhile, the tape dispenser, so ubiquitous as to pass unnoticed except when needed, had developed a crack in its base, and what gave it its dependable ballast was starting to spill.   As it became lighter, it sat in plain view,  completely unsuspected.
